Why Enrollment Timing Matters More Than Most People Realize

Health insurance and Medicare don't work like most purchases — you can't just sign up when you're ready. There are specific windows each year when you can enroll, switch plans, or make changes to your coverage. Miss one of those windows, and you may be waiting a full year before you get another chance.

We think about enrollment timing the way most people think about the holidays — you want to have everything locked in before you're caught up in the season. Don't be putting up the Christmas tree before your enrollment is settled.

We contact our clients before each enrollment window opens to review their current coverage and flag anything that needs attention. If you're not a client yet, this page is a good place to start — and a call to our Roanoke Rapids office is an even better one.

Medicare Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is when Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their coverage. Coverage changes made during this window take effect January 1 of the following year.

During the AEP, you can:

  • Switch from original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or back again
  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Add, drop, or switch a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan

This window applies to people already enrolled in Medicare. If you're turning 65, you have a separate Initial Enrollment Period — call us and we'll walk you through when yours begins.

We recommend reaching out before October 15. That gives us time to pull up your current plan, compare what's changed for the coming year, and make sure any switch you want is submitted before December 7.

ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment: November 1 – December 15

The ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment Period is when individuals and families can enroll in or change a health insurance plan through HealthCare.gov. Coverage selected during this window starts January 1.

If you want coverage starting February 1, you historically had until January 15 to enroll. Note that federal rule changes effective for fall 2026 will end the January 15 extension — this page will be updated when final guidance is issued. When in doubt, don't wait past December 15.

During this window, you can:

  • Enroll in a new individual or family plan if you don't currently have coverage
  • Switch from one marketplace plan to another
  • Update your application to reflect income or household changes that affect your subsidy

If you're self-employed, between jobs, or buying coverage on your own, this is your window. A local independent agent can compare every plan available in your county and handle the enrollment at no fee to you.

What If You Miss Open Enrollment?

Missing the window doesn't always mean going without coverage. A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) opens when a qualifying life event changes your coverage situation. Common qualifying events include:

  • Losing job-based health insurance
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a child
  • Moving to a new state or county
  • Aging off a parent's plan at 26

A SEP typically gives you 60 days from the qualifying event to enroll. The rules are specific and the clock starts quickly — call us as soon as the event happens and we'll tell you exactly what you're working with.

For Medicare, there are also Special Enrollment Periods tied to specific situations, like moving out of a plan's service area or losing employer coverage after 65.

Life doesn't wait for open enrollment. If something changed, call us and we'll figure out your options.

Coverage That Doesn't Follow a Calendar

Not everything runs on an enrollment window. Dental and vision insurance, small business group plans, and large group employer coverage are available year-round. If you're looking to add supplemental or business coverage, you don't need to wait for November.

Common Questions About Open Enrollment in North Carolina

  • When does health insurance open enrollment start in North Carolina?

ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment starts November 1 each year. Coverage enrolled by December 15 starts January 1. Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, with changes also effective January 1.

  • What are the Medicare open enrollment dates?

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 each year. During this window, beneficiaries can switch Medicare Advantage plans, return to original Medicare, or change their Part D prescription drug coverage. Changes take effect January 1.

  • Can I enroll in health insurance outside of open enrollment in North Carolina?

Yes, in many cases. A Special Enrollment Period opens when you experience a qualifying life event — losing job-based coverage, moving, getting married, having a child, and others. You typically have 60 days from the event to enroll. Call us when the event happens and we'll confirm whether you qualify.

  • What happens if I miss open enrollment for health insurance?

If you miss the standard window and don't have a qualifying life event, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period for marketplace coverage. In the meantime, short-term coverage may be an option worth discussing. This is one reason we contact clients before the window opens every year — so it doesn't come down to the last day.

  • Do I need an agent to enroll in a health insurance plan?

No — but working with an authorized agent costs you nothing and typically results in a better-informed decision. We compare every available plan in your county, explain what you're looking at in plain terms, check your subsidy eligibility, and handle enrollment. There's no fee and no obligation.

Don't Wait Until the Window Is Closing

The best time to call us is before enrollment opens — not the week it closes. We review your current plan, flag anything that's changed, and make sure your enrollment is submitted and confirmed before the deadline.

No fee. No commitment. Just a conversation that could save you from a year without the right coverage.
