Individual Health Insurance, Handled by People Who Know You

Finding the right health plan on your own can feel like reading a foreign language. We make it simple — and we stay with you long after the paperwork is done.

Real Help for a Decision That Actually Matters

Shopping for individual health insurance means weighing premiums, deductibles, networks, and prescription coverage all at once — and the wrong call can cost you thousands. At GW Hux & Co., we sit down with you, learn what you actually need, and match you to a plan that fits your budget and your life. There's no fee for our help. That's just how we've always done it.

We work with individuals across Halifax, Northampton, and Warren counties, and we're available by phone, in person at our Roanoke Rapids office, or by virtual meeting — whatever works best for you.

When Can You Sign Up?

Individual health insurance has specific enrollment windows, and missing them can leave you without coverage for months. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment runs from November 1 through January 15 in North Carolina. This is when anyone can apply for or change a marketplace plan. Coverage typically begins January 1 if you enroll by December 15.

Step 2: Special Enrollment Periods

Certain life events — losing job-based coverage, getting married, having a baby, moving — trigger a Special Enrollment Period that gives you 60 days to apply outside of Open Enrollment.

Step 3: Year-Round Options

Some plans are available outside of standard enrollment windows. We can walk you through what's available based on your situation.

We've Been Doing This Since 1996

GW Hux & Co. has been a family-owned agency in Roanoke Rapids for nearly three decades. Founder Phil Hux is still here, and so are team members who have been with us for more than ten years. When you call us, you're not reaching a national call center — you're reaching neighbors who know this community and will remember your name next year when it's time to review your plan again.

That's what we mean when we say we're selling service, not just selling insurance.

Questions We Hear Most Often

  • How much does individual health insurance cost in North Carolina?

It depends on your age, income, and the plan you choose. Many individuals qualify for tax credits that significantly reduce their monthly premium. We'll run the numbers with you so you know exactly what to expect before you commit to anything.
  • Do I need to use a specific network of doctors?

Each plan has its own network, and that's one of the most important things to check before you enroll. We help you confirm that your current doctors and any specialists you see are covered under the plan you're considering.
  • What if I miss Open Enrollment?

You may still have options. If you've had a qualifying life event, a Special Enrollment Period may apply. We can review your situation and let you know what's available.
  • Is there a fee to work with GW Hux & Co.?

Never. Our guidance, plan comparisons, and ongoing support cost you nothing. We're compensated by the insurance carriers — not by you.
  • What happens after I enroll?

We stay with you. If you have a billing issue, a coverage question, or need to make a change mid-year, you call us — not a 1-800 number. That ongoing relationship is the whole point.
