Medicare Advantage Plans Explained by People Who Live Here Too

Local guidance on Medicare Advantage — from a family-owned agency that has helped North Carolina neighbors navigate coverage decisions since 1996.

Medicare Advantage — sometimes called Medicare Part C — is an alternative to Original Medicare offered through private insurance carriers. These plans bundle your hospital coverage, medical coverage, and often prescription drug coverage into a single plan, and many include extras like dental and vision benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover.

Whether a Medicare Advantage plan makes sense for you depends on your health, your budget, your doctors, and how often you use your coverage. That's not a question a website can answer for you — but it's exactly the kind of conversation we're here to have.

What Is Medicare Advantage, and Is It Right for You?

What Medicare Advantage Plans Typically Include

Most Medicare Advantage plans bundle several types of coverage into one monthly premium:

  • Hospital and inpatient care (Part A benefits)
  • Doctor visits and outpatient services (Part B benefits)
  • Prescription drug coverage included in most plans
  • Dental and vision benefits on many plans
  • Hearing benefits on select plans
  • $0 or low-premium options available depending on your county and plan

Coverage details, networks, and costs vary by plan and by where you live. We'll walk you through what's available in your area so you can compare options side by side.

How We Help You Choose

We don't hand you a stack of brochures and wish you luck. When you come to us for Medicare Advantage guidance, we sit down with you — in person at our Roanoke Rapids office or by phone or virtual meeting — and go through your situation together.

We look at your current doctors, your prescriptions, how often you use your coverage, and what you can comfortably spend each month. Then we help you compare the plans available in your area and find the one that fits your life, not just your budget.

There's no added fee for our help — ever. That's what we mean when we say we're in the business of selling service.

We've Been Doing This Since Before Most Plans Existed

  • When does Medicare Advantage enrollment open?

The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 each year. Plans selected during this window take effect January 1. If you're turning 65, you have a personal Initial Enrollment Period that begins three months before your birthday month and extends three months after.
  • Can I switch Medicare Advantage plans outside of open enrollment?

In most cases, you can make changes during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which runs January 1 through March 31. You may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you experience a qualifying life event, such as moving or losing other coverage.
  • What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that bundles your benefits. Medicare Supplement — also called Medigap — works alongside Original Medicare to help cover costs like copays and deductibles that Original Medicare leaves unpaid. The right choice depends on your health situation and how you prefer to manage costs.
  • Do I need to enroll in Medicare Part B before I can get Medicare Advantage?

Yes. You must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B to be eligible for a Medicare Advantage plan. If you're approaching 65 and haven't enrolled in Part B yet, we can walk you through that process as well.
  • Is there a cost to work with GW Hux & Co. to find a Medicare Advantage plan?

There is no fee to work with us. We are compensated by the insurance carrier, not by you. Our job is to help you find the right plan — and to keep supporting you after enrollment if questions or problems come up.

When Can You Enroll in Medicare Advantage?

Enrollment timing matters. Missing a window can mean waiting months for coverage to begin or facing a gap in your benefits.
