Medicare Plans in North Carolina — Explained by a Local Agent Who Can Actually Enroll You

We're a family-owned agency in Roanoke Rapids, and we've helped  seniors navigate Medicare for over 30 years.

Medicare Covers a Lot — But Not Everything

Original Medicare — Parts A and B — covers hospital stays and doctor visits, but it leaves meaningful gaps. Copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and most prescription drug costs aren't covered under original Medicare alone. For most people, that means choosing some form of supplemental coverage to go alongside it.

There are three main paths:

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) — A private alternative to original Medicare that bundles hospital, medical, and often prescription coverage into one plan. Most plans have networks and include additional benefits like dental and vision.

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) — Works alongside original Medicare to cover most of what it doesn't pay. More predictable out-of-pocket costs, broader provider access, and higher monthly premiums than Advantage plans.

  • Medicare Part D — Standalone prescription drug coverage that pairs with original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan.

None of these is universally the right choice. The right answer depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your budget, and how often you use your coverage. We help you work through all of it — in plain terms, at no cost, with no pressure to choose any particular option.

Medicare Supplement

Coverage that works alongside original Medicare to fill the gaps — copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. More predictable costs, broader provider access, and a higher monthly premium than most Advantage plans.

Medicare Part D

Standalone prescription drug coverage for people on original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan. Plans vary significantly in what they cover and what they cost — comparing options before you enroll matters.

Turning 65? Your Enrollment Window Is Already Open

If you're approaching 65, your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your birth month and runs through three months after it — a seven-month window total. Missing it can result in late enrollment penalties that follow you for as long as you have Medicare.

The best time to call us is before your birth month, not after. We'll walk you through what Medicare covers, what it doesn't, and which supplemental options make sense for your situation — so you're enrolled confidently before the deadline, not scrambling after it.

Already on Medicare? You Can Review Your Plan Every Fall

If you're already enrolled in Medicare, the Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 each year. During this window, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, return to original Medicare, or change your Part D prescription coverage. Changes take effect January 1.

We review every existing client's Medicare plan each fall. If something has changed — your prescriptions, your providers, your premium — we flag it and walk you through whether a switch makes sense. Even if your current plan is still the right call, it's good to know that.

You're not locked in forever. Just until December 7. And we make sure you know what you're looking at before that window closes.

Kind Words From Happy Policyholders

Why Work With a Local Medicare Agent?

Calling a 1-800 number to sort out Medicare means talking to someone who doesn't know your county, your doctors, or your situation. Our office is in Roanoke Rapids, and the agents here have been navigating Medicare for  North Carolina and Southside Virginia seniors for over 30 years.

We're authorized to enroll clients directly — which means you don't need to make a separate call to the carrier. We handle it, confirm your enrollment, and follow up to make sure everything is active before your effective date.

There is never a fee for our services. Working with a local agent doesn't change what you pay for the plan.

Call us before your birth month — we'll walk you through exactly what to do.

  • What are my Medicare options in North Carolina?

Most North Carolina seniors choose between Medicare Advantage, which replaces original Medicare with a private plan, and Medicare Supplement, which works alongside original Medicare to cover cost-sharing gaps. • How do I sign up for Medicare in North Carolina?

You can enroll through Social Security, online at ssa.gov, or with the help of a local agent. Working with an authorized Medicare agent like GW Hux & Co. doesn't add any cost — we handle the enrollment process, confirm your coverage, and follow up to make sure everything is in place.
